How do I set up the IRIS Discovery Kits?

IRIS Connect is professional development tool that empowers us as teachers to reflect on, analyse and share practice. It uses a web platform and mobile camera systems which are easy to use while offering essential security and permissions. We can record our lessons and reflect privately and – if we chose - share with each other. Of course the last stage is up to you as the video is completely private unless you decide to share it. Video can be such a valuable tool for all of us to learn from each other and develop our practice.

The Discovery kit allows you to easily record yourself without the need for additional IT Support. Setting it up and using it is made as easy as possible for you.

Discovery Kit Content

Your Discovery Kit is designed to remain fully assembled in the box to make setting it up as easy as possible. After charging the batteries, please return all the contents to the Discovery Kit box in the correct place so they are available for the next user.

  1. Open the hatch on the back of the tracking base and remove the microphone.

  2. Hold down the power button on the tracking base until a red light comes on. Hold down the power button on the side of the microphone to turn on the microphone. Adding a user to an iPad

To add a user to the iPad

Turn the iPad on by pressing the button on the top. If the iPad was powered off (rather than just asleep) you will see the Apple logo. Wait for the Unlock Screen.

Hold your finger on the arrow and slide your finger across the screen to unlock the iPad. Tap the IRIS Connect application icon at the bottom of the screen.

The IRIS Connect dashboard will display.

If this is your first time adding your user account to the IRIS Connect app on this iPad, you must be connected to Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi icon is green if you have an internet connection.

NOTE: If you see a red Wi-Fi icon, follow the instructions for Connecting to Wi-Fi.

To add a user to this iPad, first go to 'New Reflection' and then tap Add User.

Enter your Username and Password - these are the same as you use for the web platform.

NOTE: You must be connected to Wi-Fi and the Web Application to add a user. The check marks next to Wireless and Web Application indicate that you are connected.

Tap Verify Account.

Now that this user account has been added to this iPad, you don’t have to enter your username to create a reflection. Instead, whenever you create a reflection, select your username from a list of users that have been added to this iPad.

Pairing your iPads

Pairing the iPads for a dual observation happens just before the recording.

Note: Make sure that with a dual recording the primary device (the one you create the recording with) is the one that is paired with the tracking base (using Bluetooth).

  1. When you set up a reflection (Discovery Kit reflection guide) you will be asked whether you wish to add a paired device or not. Select yes.

  2. Once this has been selected move on to the second iPad. Tap the pairing button.

  3. A list of available devices will come up. You will be able to see the first iPad.

  4. Once this has been selected then both screens will go to the recording page that shows the camera feed.

Any action performed on the first iPad (the one the reflection has been started on) will translate to the second. When you start the recording on the first then both screens will become black and the recording will start. When you end the reflection on the first, it will do the same on the second. However, you will need to select ‘Save and Upload’ on both devices. Once this has been done then both devices will upload their reflections onto the web platform.

Recording and uploading your reflection

  1. Open the IRIS Connect Discovery Kit app

  2. Select 'Create New'

  3. Once selected, a page of users will appear. Select yourself and put in your password.

If you aren’t on the list then add yourself as a user. See the ‘add users’ guide.

  1. The ‘Title’ page will appear. This will allow you to name your reflection. Once you have done this press ‘Next’.

  2. You will be taken to a ‘Pairing (OPTIONAL)’ page. If you wish to record a dual Reflection then please see the pairing guide. If not please select ‘No’.

  3. The next page that you will be taken to is the recording page. This should show you the camera feed. To begin the recording press the record button at the top, or use the remote record on the Swivl’s microphone (Swivl guide). The screen will turn black. This indicates that the recording has begun.

  4. When you have finished recording press the ‘STOP’ button. This will take you to a page that gives you the chance to delete or upload your reflection. Press the ‘Save and Upload’ button to upload your reflection to the Web Platform.

  5. When you select to upload, you will be taken back to the dashboard. The upload progress will appear at the bottom. The progress will travel across the bar. When it fills and then goes back to empty the reflection has been uploaded.
